Press Review: This is the third title in this
publishers Aircraft of the Israeli Air Force series.
It comes in an A4 format with a laminated cover and 114 pages, of
which 50% are in colour.
The narrative text is all in English and charts the use of the A-4
by the IAF. The acquisition of A-4s coupled with their operational
allocation and service are all covered. The latter element also
charts the number of aerial kills achieved by IAF pilots. The vast
majority of the title though deals with each squadron that operated
the A-4. In these chapters are full details of the squadrons used
with operational kills etc. Coupled with this are colour photographs
of specific aircraft and colour side profiles. The final section
of this title offer a black and white and colour walk around
series of photos of an A-4 and a couple of four-view colour profiles.
This is a stunning book, filled to the brim with historical information
and images. The colour side profiles are keyed to FS numbers, all
of which is very useful to the modeller. All in all this is one
of those titles you will be really annoyed if you miss
it! Scale Aviation Modeller International, January 2002
The third in this ongoing series of soft-back books by the
team that are responsible for the excellent IsraDecals, this 116
page publication covers in detail the nine squadrons that operated
the McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawk in Israeli Air Force service from
1967 to date.
An introductory chapter details the history of the type in IDF/AF
service, including the reasons behind the introduction and/or development
of all the various sub-types and ongoing modifications and upgrades
peculiar to those aircraft operated by the IDF/AF.
This is followed by separate chapters, each dealing with a specific
individual units prior history, the A-4s introduction
in to that squadrons service and then combat operations -
of the nine squadrons to use the Skyhawk operationally. The book
is absolutely crammed full with photographs - mainly in colour but
also in b&w - several of which were taken on base
during the many combat sorties undertaken throughout the A-4s service
with IDF/AF.
The colour artwork by Raanan Weiss is excellent with several
profiles from each unit and four views of the various camouflage
patterns and colour schemes applied to Israeli A-4s. The text is
well written and informative with scores of pilot anecdotes of what
it was like to fly and fight in the Skyhawk.
Unreservedly recommended for aviation enthusiast and modeller alike. Scale Aircraft Modelling, February 2002
